 Tibetan Institute Of Performing Arts was established in August 1950 which is responsible for preserving and promoting Tibet's unique tradition of performing arts. The Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) was founded by Tenzin Gyatso, The 14th Dalai Lama. After the Chinese occupation, his holiness The Dalai Lama felt it was important to safeguard the traditional performing arts of Tibet so that they don't get lost forever.




TIPA soon become the center of the city as well as the social life of Tibetens living in Dharamshala.

TIPA preserves a wide repertoire of musical, dance and the optical traditions from Tibet. The institute has modern theater troupe which puts on contemporary plays. TIPA maintains its own workshops for making costumes, masks, and musical instruments.

TIPA also runs a school where a mix of modern academic and traditional Tibetan education is provided to children who are in addition, trained in Tibetan music, dancing and acting from an early age.
Its annual 10 Day Shoton festival attracts people from all over the country. The performance at the festival includes dancing and singing by the artists in elaborate costumes. The folk songs tell stories of interesting characters like King, fools, yogis, and witches. The instrument like cymbals and drums add to the enchanting atmosphere and make it an unforgettable experience.
